Perhaps the game has been designed to be played at home on a couch where you’ll be constantly connected to the Wi-Fi. Can't even play the single-player without an Internet connection. While mobile connectivity has come a long way, it’s still far from perfect, and that makes the prospect of playing Blackout during, for example, your daily commute, quite painful. Even the single player campaign is blocked off behind this always-online requirement. As you can imagine, this also makes aiming and shooting at the same time difficult.Īnother major gripe, especially considering the platform, is the fact that you can’t play MC5 at all unless you’re constantly connected to the Internet. To look around, you have to drag your thumb on the right side of the display, while attempting to avoid accidentally pressing any of the buttons. The left side of the display is dedicated to movement, while the right side has a bunch of buttons for shooting, aiming down the sights and reloading. Without a third-party controller, Modern Combat 5: Blackout is incredibly awkward to play, and that’s mostly because rather than utilising the strengths of the mobile platform, Gameloft opted to chase the ever-elusive “console experience”. It uses some awkward on-screen button placement that makes it difficult to either aim around or shoot, depending on the control scheme you pick. The most important aspect of any FPS is how it plays, and this is where Modern Combat 5 stumbles the most. Modern Combat 5 has no shortage of spectacles. It uses the “how we got here” trope and has you playing through missions in a non-linear timeline in an attempt to piece together what exactly is happening, much like Battlefield 3.
The story itself, however, isn’t very good. There’s even some great voice acting and a plot to give some semblance of context to Blackout’s campaign. The story mode is intense you’ll find yourself in a large variety of levels, ranging from what seemed to be the canals of Venice to shabby warehouses.
